Larry Cowgill, DVM, PhD

Dr. Cowgill received his DVM degree from the University of California at Davis and completed internship and residency training at the University of Pennsylvania.  He completed post graduate training at the Renal and Electrolyte Section of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in basic renal physiology and nephrology and earned a PhD degree in Comparative Medical Sciences in 1976.  He is Board Certified in Small Animal Internal Medicine and a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (Small Animal Internal Medicine) and is the inaugural President of the newly recognized American College of Veterinary Nephrology and Urology.

 

Dr. Cowgill recently retired as Professor in the Department of Medicine and Epidemiology of the University of California-Davis School of Veterinary Medicine after 47 years. For 23 years, he was the Director and Chief Veterinary Medical Officer of the University of California Veterinary Medical Center-San Diego. 

 

Dr. Cowgill is acknowledged for his expertise in urinary disease and was an early pioneer in the application and development of extracorporeal therapies for dogs and cats. He established the world’s first clinical hemodialysis and extracorporeal program for animals at UC Davis.  He established the Hemodialysis Academy which provides in depth, advanced didactic instruction in extracorporeal therapies to trainees in over 32 countries throughout the World.  Dr. Cowgill has enjoyed and dedicated 53 years to the practice of veterinary internal medicine, nephrology, and extracorporeal therapies.
