Overview

Kidney transplantation is the best option to restore quality of life for most patients with end stage renal disease (ESRD). This conference will provide dialysis unit staff the relevant and accurate information they require regarding advances in kidney transplantation in order to educate patients in their dialysis units. Dialysis patients benefit from education that starts early in their diagnosis of ESRD. Through partnership with dialysis unit staff and nephrology practice staff, we are able to provide a consistent message throughout the care continuum about the lifesaving benefit of kidney transplantation, connections between patient experience and transplant outcomes, and strategies for overcoming barriers to successful transplantation.

Date & Location
Wednesday, June 18, 2025, 7:30 AM - 3:35 PM EST, Hillsdale Conference Center, Charlottesville, VA

Target Audience
Specialties - Transplant
Professions - Dietitian, Nurse, Other, Social Worker

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Discuss how a patient's spirituality may impact their ability to accept a kidney transplant and how the transplant team can address potential barriers.
  2. Discuss multi-organ transplant, the timing of such surgeries, and which patients benefit from this approach.
  3. Discuss delayed graft function and its impact on a kidney transplant recipient, their family and dialysis unit staff.
  4. Describe how motivational interviewing can be utilized to help patients achieve their transplant goals.
  5. Identify best practice to encourage weight loss for patients who struggle to meet BMI criteria enabling them to be active on the kidney transplant wait list.
  6. Describe management of post-transplant diabetes for patients who have undergone kidney transplant.
  7. Discuss post-operative complications of kidney transplant and most common reasons for readmission after kidney transplant.
  8. Review anti-rejection treatment regimens that include monthly Belatacept and which patients are best suited to this immunosuppressive medication.
