Overview
The 18th Annual Therapeutic Apheresis Academy (TAA 2026) is a multidisciplinary 2½-day course designed for physicians in nephrology, hematology, pathology/blood banking, and allied health professionals (nurses, pharmacists, NP/PAs) with an interest in therapeutic apheresis. Building on the success of prior TAAs, the 2026 program will continue to integrate evidence-based clinical content with interprofessional education, practical demonstration workshops, and interactive case-based discussions.

Date & Location
Thursday, September 24, 2026, 7:00 AM - Saturday, September 26, 2026, 12:00 PM ET, UVA Pinn Hall Conference Center, Charlottesville, VA

Target Audience
Specialties - Hematology & Oncology, Nephrology, Pathology
Professions - Allied Health Professional, Nurse, Nurse Practitioner, Physician, Physician Associate

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Recognize indications for therapeutic apheresis treatment across medical specialties.
  2. Apply evidence-based medicine, including the current ASFA Guidelines (Category I–IV), to clinical decision-making in apheresis.
  3. Write appropriate clinical apheresis orders and prescriptions, including volume calculations for red cell exchange and TPE.
  4. Identify practices that decrease complications during apheresis procedures, including vascular access selection and management.
  5. Describe advances in immune effector cell (IEC) therapies, gene therapies, and implications for HPC and MNC collections.
  6. Explain how apheresis is applied across diverse fields including neurology, nephrology, hematology, oncology, and transplantation.
  7. Compare centrifugal, filtration, and photopheresis technologies and select appropriately for patient and indication.
  8. Recognize and manage acute reactions during apheresis procedures.
  9. Apply clinical and administrative knowledge to establish or expand a therapeutic apheresis service.
  10. Discuss emerging and off-guideline indications and the evidence (or lack thereof) supporting their use.
  11. Distinguish and differentiate procedures on centrifugation, column (filtration), and centrifugation + irradiation (ECP) instruments.
  12. Elucidate patient information required for each instrument class.
  13. Describe vascular access options and requirements as they relate to patient, procedure, and instrument.
