Overview

The UVA Health EDS & Hypermobility Disorders PT/OT Symposium is a half-day continuing education program designed to enhance rehabilitation professionals’ knowledge and practical skills in caring for individuals with Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (EDS), hypermobility spectrum disorders (HSD), and related complex conditions. The program will feature expert presentations on evidence-based rehabilitation approaches, common clinical challenges, and the impact of comorbidities such as dysautonomia, chronic pain, fatigue, and activity intolerance on treatment planning. Participants will engage in a hands-on workshop focused on assessment strategies, stabilization, proprioception, pacing, energy conservation, and adaptive interventions. The symposium will also provide updates on the UVA Health EDS & Hypermobility Disorders Center, referral pathways, research initiatives, and opportunities for regional collaboration. The program is intended for physiatrists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, therapy assistants, students, and other rehabilitation professionals seeking practical tools to improve care for patients with hypermobility-related disorders.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Apply individualized stabilization, proprioceptive, motor-control, and graded strengthening interventions for patients with hEDS/HSD.
  2. List strategies for the use of a tailored exercise regimen in the treatment of hypermobile patients.
  3. Incorporate biopsychosocial principles and appropriate interdisciplinary referral pathways into rehabilitation plans for patients with EDS/HSD.
