Overview

Registration open!

In this one day conference, a team of multi-disciplinary experts will present on topics relevant for practicing gastroenterologists, hepatologists, primary care physicians, physician assistants, advanced practice providers, nurses, and anyone involved with providing patient care for liver disease before, during and after transplantation. We will explore the latest developments in organ recovery, innovative treatments for liver tumors, and evolving guidelines in transplant decision-making. Expert-led sessions will highlight emerging techniques such as normothermic and regional perfusion, histotripsy, and strategies for managing alcohol-associated liver disease. Attendees will engage with case studies and dynamic Q&A sessions designed to drive equitable, expert patient care.

Date & Location
Saturday, September 27, 2025, 7:15 AM - 2:30 PM EST, Omni Hotel, Charlottesville, VA

Target Audience
Specialties - Transplant
Professions - Dietitian, Nurse, Nurse Practitioner, Physician, Physician Associate, Social Worker

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate effective communication techniques to approach and engage donor families in end of life discussions with empathy, respect and cultural sensitivity.
  2. Evaluate the role of the donor care unit in optimizing organ recovery, focusing on medical management, post-mortem care and interventions that maximize donor organ quality and availability.
  3. Describe the evolving technologies and methodologies related to deceased donor organ recovery including advancements in preservation, machine perfusion, and organ viability assessment.
  4. Assess the feasibility and risks associated with transplanting medically complex organs, taking into account donor history, organ function and recipient suitability.
  5. Identify key factors contributing to geographic disparities in liver transplant availability, transplantation rates and access to healthcare resources.
  6. Explain latest advancements in interventional radiology techniques for the diagnosis and treatment of liver tumors.
  7. Identify key factors influencing surgical decisions in cirrhotic patients.
  8. Discuss the unique challenges of anesthesia management in liver transplant recipients.
  9. Analyze diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for managing PVT in both transplant and non-transplant candidates, including its effect on liver transplant feasibility and outcomes.
  10. Describe the standard evaluation and classification of portal vein thrombosis (PVT) and its impact on prognosis in cirrhotic patients.
  11. Define post-transplant MASH and understand it's pathophysiology.
  12. Describe the indications for TIPS including role in managing portal hypertension, variceal bleeding and refractory ascites.
  13. Recognize the relationship between frailty and liver transplantation, focusing on frailty as a predictor of surgical complications, prolonged hospital stay and post-transplant morbidity.
