2026 Trauma Sensitive Human Trafficking Training for Healthcare workers

This educational activity is a one-hour interdisciplinary healthcare training focused on identifying and responding to human trafficking in healthcare settings. The session reviews the epidemiology and definitions of human trafficking, recruitment and grooming strategies, populations at increased risk, healthcare-specific red flags, trauma-sensitive communication techniques, the neurobiological impact of complex trauma on survivor behavior and decision-making, and reporting and referral pathways relevant to the Charlottesville and University of Virginia healthcare systems. Additional discussion includes how chronic trauma and traumatic brain injury (TBI) may affect memory, emotional regulation, executive functioning, attachment, and responses to healthcare interactions. The training is designed to improve healthcare providers’ ability to recognize trafficking-related presentations, respond using trauma-sensitive approaches, and facilitate linkage to appropriate medical, behavioral health, social work, and community-based resources. Educational strategies include case-based discussion, healthcare workflow analysis, and application of multidisciplinary referral practices to support translation of knowledge into clinical practice.

1. Define human trafficking and distinguish between common forms of trafficking encountered in healthcare settings
2. Identify common risk factors, recruitment strategies, and clinical red flags associated with human trafficking
3. Describe trauma-sensitive communication techniques that support patient safety and reduce retraumatization.
4. Recognize barriers that may prevent trafficking survivors from disclosing exploitation or accessing services
5. Apply healthcare-specific reporting and referral strategies for patients impacted by trafficking
6. Identify local and national resources available for individuals impacted by trafficking and complex trauma.
7. Describe the role of interdisciplinary collaboration in responding to trafficking within healthcare and community systems.
